What Was Dr. Farmer Like?: Demeanor and the Uniqueness

Mary Hellen Dellinger attend Mary Washington College and graduated in 1990. She was in Dr. Farmer's Civil Rights course when she was an undergraduate student. 

Mary Hellen Dellinger graduted from Mary Washington College in 1990 and was one of Dr. Farmer's students. She recalls the significance of hearing accounts of the Civil Rights Movement from someone who played such an intricate part in its success (00:51-01:01). Dellinger states that despite the hardships that Dr. Farmer had to endure, he was never bitter about recounting his experiences (01:41-02:08). 

Dr. Farmer and his course had such a huge impact on Dellinger that she stated that his class was the best course she had ever taken (01:30-01:40).

Mr. Williams was a part of the James Farmer Scholars Program during his high school years. Mr. Williams currently serves as the Assistant Director of the James Farmer Multicultural Center.

Christopher Williams first met Dr. Farmer in 1996 as he was a part of the James Farmer Scholar program. Williams spent a portion of his high school time under the mentorship of Dr. Farmer (02:30-03:40). 

Williams describes Dr. Farmer as a very kind person with a deep and hearty chuckle (05:51-07:53).

Dr. McClurken attend Mary Washington College and graduated in 1994. He was in Dr. Farmer's Civil Rights class when he was an undergraduate. Dr. McClurken currently serves as the Chief of Staff and as a History professor at UMW. 

Jeffrey McClurken graduated Mary Washington College in 1994 and was a student in Dr. Farmer's class. McClurken is currently a faculty member at the University of Mary Washington. 

Much like Dellinger's experiences in the classroom with Dr. Farmer, McClurken comments on the ability to hear stories of history from someone who was there himself (00:55-01:10). 

McClurken fondly remembers Dr. Farmer as analytical of his own past and represented what was realistically happening during the Civil Rights Movement (02:11-03:30). 

The longevity of Dr. Farmer's lessons can be see in the ideals that McClurken upholds today alongside his memories of sharing awe with his peers when in class with Dr. Farmer (03:30-05:09).
